What it Shwas Suzi McDonough
I'm Suzi. I live in suburban Mpls/St. Paul, and spend my days working in graphic design and sales. I suddenly find myself caught up in the First Day to 5K, a podcast running program that should have me ready to run a 5K race in October or so. My fridge is filled with organic stuff these days, because I've just started learning about what sorts of dastardly things are done to our food in this country, and it's pretty horrifying. My awesome family includes The First Baseman and a couple of daughters, Rose and Kelly, who are just about grownups. I love the ocean like it's my religion and try to visit it a couple times per year. The girls and I are on a constant quest to change The First Baseman's mind about stuff, like getting a dog and letting me use his name when I blog about him. I see as much theater as I possibly can, and I am the last remaining Minnesota Timberwolves fan. Look for me in section 126.

Four Foods on Friday

Time again for the food meme from Fun, Crafts and Recipes! You should do this one. Yes, you! You really should! You like food, after all, right? There is still time to play today, ,or you can start next week. Either way!

#1. Turnips. Love em or leave em?

Oddly enough, I cannot for the life of me remember what a turnip tastes like! I can picture what it looks like, but I don't remember seeing them in the grocery store lately. I guess I leave 'em then, huh?

#2. What’s your favorite roasted dish?

I really like roasted vegetables, especially cauliflower. I like to cut up a head of the stuff and place the flat edges down against the bottom of the roasting pan, which I have coated with butter and olive oil. Then I like to drizzle a little more olive oil over the top, sprinkle with coarse salt and even coarser pepper, and roast it until the cauliflower pieces get a little brown and crisp. Oh, man. Yum. Then again, you can't beat roasted beef tenderloin roast, can you? Just throw it in the oven for 40 minutes with a little salt and pepper, and it's tastier that any meat you'd find in a restaurant.

#3. Salsa. What kind do you like?

I can my own salsa every year, just as the farmer's markets are full of the ripest, juiciest, most flavorful tomatoes of the season. Sometimes I use a lot of basil. Other times I throw in some tequila and lime. Sometimes just the basic tomato-onion-pepper-cilantro mixture. When I buy salsa from the store, though, I like the kind that has roasted corn and black beans in it. It almost seems like that isn't even salsa, but more like a relish or chutney, though.

#4. Share directions on how to make your favorite quick meal, meaning start to finish in about 30 minutes or less.

"Quick meal" around here often means a big, hearty salad. I'll start with lettuce and start tossing in anything I can find. I need protein—some leftover chicken, bacon, toasted walnuts, garbanzo beans, chunks of cheese. Then I'll add all the vegetables I usually have around, like tomatoes and carrots, maybe some broccoli. Then I'll start looking for something to make it interesting. Maybe a can of artichoke hearts or hearts of palm (The First Baseman's favorite) or dried fruit. If I have any bread, I might make some croutons. A sprinkle of bleu cheese and sunflower seeds, hopefully. Everybody slops on their favorite dressing, and we call it dinner.
